At present we are a valued member of this post war European 'club' but all this is at risk with Tory threats of an IN/OUT referendum.
In Frome as elsewhere we will soon be directly choosing our area MEP’s for the European Parliament. We also indirectly select our representation in the European Council of Ministers by virtue of our Prime Minister. These are both democratic methods. The other arms of the EU are bureaucratic, namely the Commission that represents Europe as a whole, and the Court that seeks to pronounce on legal issues. At present we are a valued member of this post war European 'club' but all this is at risk with Tory threats of an IN/OUT referendum. I return here to the democratic principle, namely that Parliament rejected a private members' Bill on this matter last week only to be encouraged by the PM to present it again, failing which (third time lucky) he will introduce such a Bill IF he is re-elected in 2015.
Unfortunately he has ignored one of the main reasons for its rejection,
namely ‘WHAT NEXT?’ Obviously a YES (Stay in vote) requires no change to
membership but what does a NO (Get Out) vote signify, and might we be
setting a dangerous example for others to follow?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it seems quite obvious now that such an
arrangement after WW1 Would have avoided the bloody conflict of WW2.
Disagreements do occur within and between States but so far in this Union of
Nations we have not come to blows. Unfortunately this Government seems
unaware of this important historical context in which Michael Gove recently
spoke of WW1 as a 'Just War' for the Allies. What claptrap, and he is supposed
to lead our Education system. Furthermore the idea that the UK is able to
cherry pick tasty morsels from the EU whilst trampling over the needs of
others reminds of the days when I went 'scrumping'. (allegedly)
No, I’m not against structural reforms nor a sensible referendum that posits
consequences as well as choices, so let’s have no more of this Rule Brittania,
Jingoism and Just War nonsense and let’s remember the sacrifices of millions
throughout ALL European Nations who brought us to this peaceful stage.
